When is a death an excess death? Getting behind the numbers The number of excess (ie, more than expected) deaths is a measure that’s probably now familiar to many since the Covid-19 pandemic started in 2020. It's widely used nationally and internationally to measure the mortality impact of Covid-19, including indirect impacts such as deaths resulting from unmet or delayed care.
