      £3 million more to reduce brain injuries at birth

      £3 million more to reduce brain injuries at birth NHS maternity staff will benefit from a further £3 million to improve the safety of the women and babies they care for, the Patient Safety Minister has announced today.

      The funding will support the RCOG, RCM and THIS Institute to deliver the second phase of a programme to reduce brain injuries at birth, which can have a devastating impact on babies and their families. Department of Health and Social Care

      High-risk Covid gene more common in South Asians University of Oxford scientists have uncovered a gene that doubles the risk of lung failure and death from Covid.

      They say around 60% of people from South Asian backgrounds and 15% of people of European ancestry carry the high-risk version of the gene.

      Vaccines are key and help significantly reduce these risks, researchers say. BBC News

      Children urged to get HPV jab after Covid saw sharp drop in uptake Cancer experts are urging families to ensure their children get the HPV vaccine after it emerged that almost half of those eligible missed out last year because of the pandemic.

      A study published in The Lancet on Thursday confirmed that the jab was cutting cases of cervical cancer by 87%. The results were hailed as powerful further evidence that the vaccine has prevented, and will continue to prevent, thousands of young people from falling ill. The Guardian

      Pregnant women in England will be inducted when they are just ONE week overdue regnant women will be offered induction when they are just one week overdue under new medical guidelines to cut the risk of stillbirths.

      Babies are due at about 40 weeks, and currently women are offered induction on the NHS if they do not go into labour naturally by 42 weeks.

      But the health watchdog yesterday said that this should be decreased to 41 weeks to cut the risk of death and complications. The Daily Mail
