2016 is make or break time for the NHS The health service cannot afford inefficiency or poor productivity, yet too often the focus is on the one-off, short term and tactical

“It’s a new year, it’s a new dawn, it’s a new life for me and I’m feeling good,” to misquote Nina Simone. But sadly not everyone starts the new year with optimism. For the NHS, 2016 really does appear to be make or break time.

The NHS is in a financial maelstrom – more than three-quarters of all providers are in deficit, amounting to a whopping £1.6bn just halfway through the financial year.
