Is the NHS on track to recruit 50,000 more nurses? In its
2019 manifesto the government pledged to increase the full-time equivalent number of nurses working in the NHS by 50,000 by March 2024. The latest data suggests that the NHS is on course to hit that headline target. However, England’s Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Ruth May, has
publicly noted that, despite the increasing number of nurses, there are still substantial shortages.
