Ambulance staff to strike on 21 December Ambulance staff across most of England and Wales will go on strike on 21 December in a dispute over pay.

The coordinated walkout by the three main ambulance unions - Unison, GMB and Unite - will affect non-life threatening calls only.

Number of smokers drops as vaping rises, data shows The number of people smoking in the UK dropped to its lowest level on record last year but more people were using e-cigarettes, new figures have revealed.

Data from the Office for National Statistics found around 13.3% of people aged 18 or over smoked cigarettes in 2021, down from 14.0% in 2020.

But 7.7% of those aged 16 and over said they used e-cigarettes - compared to 6.4% in 2020.

The first ONS records on smoking were in 2011 and found 20.2% had smoked. BBC News

Transmission of the virus among gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men (GBMSM) continued to fall and the estimated number of GBMSM living with HIV who are unaware of their infection decreased between 2019 and 2021.

However, progress towards ending HIV transmission has slowed during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and diagnoses among heterosexual people rose slightly in 2021, despite lower levels of HIV testing. This means HIV transmission and undiagnosed HIV infection in this group has not fallen.

Millions more are left waiting over a month to be seen, potentially forcing them to overcrowded A&Es or leaving them at risk of serious diseases being diagnosed too late.

It was around 8pm. It took another 14 hours for an ambulance to get to her, leaving her pregnant granddaughter to care for her through the night.

When they arrived the crews were able to give her pain relief and quickly transported her to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

But there the wait continued - there were around 30 ambulances queuing to handover patients to A&E staff.

Asian egg and black sperm donors were under-represented by 50% compared with the population, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) found.

The number of babies born from donor eggs, sperm or embryos rose from 2,500 in 1993 to 4,100 in 2019.

The first 6,000 kits will be posted by NHS Blood and Transplant this week to people who recently registered to be a blood donor but have not yet made their first appointment.

Those found to have O negative blood will be offered priority appointments to help ensure they become long-term donors. Evening Standard

GPs vote to CLOSE their doors at 5pm: Family doctors will demand NHS allows them a 9-5 working day GPs voted last night to reduce their working hours to 9am to 5pm, claiming that longer days discriminate against those with families. 

Family doctors, who earn £111,900 a year on average, will now lobby the NHS to change core opening hours in general practice from the current 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. The Daily Mail
